Don’t miss Bett Academies 2017
Academisation is one of the major topics discussed across the board in education - with thousands of schools having changed over, and many more considering the advantages and disadvantages of the switch, that’s not too surprising. Whether you’re an academy, part of a multi-academy trust, or a school wondering about academisation, there’s a lot of questions and challenges to be found.
Bett Academies is a brand-new event which aims to help answer as many of those questions, and support you through as many of those challenges, as possible. The event is organised by the group responsible for the incredible Bett show, the UK’s single largest event for those interested in educational technology, and looks set to be just as impressive.
The inaugural 2017 Bett Academies show takes place on the 16th and 17th of March, 2017, in Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre - visiting the show’s masterclasses, surgeries and exhibition (more on those below) is completely free, while attending the show’s keynotes and workshops comes with a cost - click through to find out more and book tickets.
What’s on at Bett Academies?
The Bett Academies show is heavily centred around a number of great talks, workshops and other events, covering practically every side of being/ becoming an academy. When you register for the show, you’ll be able to choose a stream, which designates which talks you’ll see (there’s also a wide range of events for all attendees), ensuring that everything you see at Bett Academies is relevant to your needs and interests.
Day 1 - Bett Academies kicks off with an exploration of the role academies play, looking at effectiveness, and considering the future of education, with National Schools Commissioner Sir David Carter bringing an update on the progress of academies. Following this, there will be a presentation on the challenges and possibilities in enabling a culture change in academies, before a large scale debate on MATs, before attendees break off into streams.
Day 2 - The second day of Bett Academies takes something of a wider look at the role of academies, starting off with a discussion on ‘the role of academies in achieving a world-class education for all’, before an examination of the framework for assessing and inspecting academies. Subsequently, there’ll be a discussion on how academies are to grow, and the challenges faced in that growth.
Leadership & Business Decisions - The first of the streams for Bett Academies, this section of the show explores the various leadership opportunities and challenges, from teacher-led CPD and business leadership (both day 1) to the financial side of academy life (day 2).
Curriculum and Assessment - Exploring approaches to teaching within academies, from case studies on flipped learning (day 1) to advice on assessing students without overly prioritising exams & grades (day 2). Day 2’s first session for this stream should definitely be important, taking a look at ‘Putting teaching and learning at the heart of an Academy’.
Multi-Academy Trusts - Designed for both MAT members and those considering becoming part of a trust, this stream explores both the challenges (with topics including day 2’s exploration of business plans for MATs and the legal process of entering a trust) and potential benefits (such as day 1’s look at sharing edtech resources between academies) of being part of an MAT.
